Afilias Limited is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland with U.S. offices near Philadelphia, PA, and sales offices in London, UK, and Düsseldorf, Germany. Afilias' technical operations are managed in Toronto, Canada.

Afilias was formed in September of 2000 by a group of industry leading domain name registrars in recognition of the need for increased competition in the domain name industry at the registry level. Afilias was one of the seven new gTLD operators selected by ICANN in November of 2000 and launched the first new gTLD registry system based on the Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) and based on a "thick" registry model. This system was launched in July 2001 for Afilias' inaugural product .INFO, which remains the most successful of the new TLDs launched to date.

Afilias was also the first to launch a number of new domain name policy initiatives. These include the launch of the first-ever "Sunrise Period" - a pre-registration period to protect intellectual property owners in the launch of a new TLD, and the execution of a unique dispute resolution process for the Sunrise period which helped to ensure fairness during the launch of the new TLD.
